Breasts are undoubtedly two of the most beautiful, empowering, and sometimes infuriating parts of being a woman, especially a plus-size woman. Shoulder straps that gouge out mini Grand Canyons, underwire that digs in mercilessly, and the joke of so-called “built-in” bras that generally lift the girls no higher than our waists are all par for the course, right?
Wrong! While finding the right bra is undoubtedly 10 times harder than finding the right spouse, it can most certainly be done and this guide will help you meet your perfect match. As far as finding a husband, you’re on your own.
Helpful Bra Tips Now
No matter which bras you try on, always keep these tips in mind to keep your girls at attention:
- Any bra should have at least 3 hook-and-eye closures for extra strength and support.
- Avoid single-layer bras with molded cups unless your particular breast shape matches those of the cups.
- To steer clear of sagging, look for bras with strong side support provided by the extra fabric lining the inside of the cup as well as high-side wings.
Most importantly, get a professional fitting!!! It’s nearly impossible to take your own bra measurements properly, which is why 80% of women end up wearing the wrong size bra. We strongly recommend Bra Tenders. With over 30 years of experience and 81 bra sizes, head Fairy Bramother Lori Kaplan and her talented team can help you find the perfect bras with their customized fittings, both in-store and virtual.
NOTE: Many bra styles are available both with underwire and without (AKA wire-free or soft cup). Both have their benefits and drawbacks, and it really comes down to personal preference in the end.
Here are 5 bra styles that will ensure your girls look their best, no matter if you’re wearing a T-shirt, an evening gown, or something in between!
1. T-shirt bra
What is it? A T-shirt bra gives moderate coverage and is meant to disappear under clothes by creating a smooth silhouette, even under the thinnest of T-shirts (hence the name). If you’re looking for a bra that forms to your shape and doesn’t show lines, you can always rely on this comfortable and supportive style.
How should it fit? To achieve the seamless look, avoid cups that gape open or overflow and find a shade that’s closest to your skin tone if you’re wearing a see-through or light-colored top.

NOTE: They even come in half-cup sizes for the perfect fit!
2. Sports bra
What is it? Designed for wear during exercise or other physical activity, sports bras are made to minimize the movement of your breasts, preventing bounce. Usually made with moisture-wicking microfiber and terry linings, they also help to absorb moisture and avoid the dreaded “boob sweat” better than the usual bra materials like nylon and satin.
How should it fit? Sports bras should fit like everyday bras; closely and without any spillover. Choose the same size you would wear in a regular bra to avoid having to fiddle with them during exercise.
NOTE: A good trick when choosing a sports bra is to take several deep breaths like you were working out to see how it will respond to vigorous activity.

3. Strapless bra⠀⠀⠀
What is it? Strapless bras are (wait for it…) bras without straps! Many women don’t know that, in any bra, most of the support comes from the band, with only a small percentage actually coming from the straps. In addition to a firmer backband to spread the weight of your boobs around your body, these bras often include silicone or rubber lining, molded cups, and/or underwire for extra support.
How should it fit? It should fit firmly around your back, and close enough on your chest to avoid your feeling the need to pull it up. Start with your normal bra size, but don’t be surprised if you need to go up or down, especially in the cup size.
NOTE: Most strapless bras come with detachable and sometimes clear straps that you can use to transform them into a racerback or halter bra as needed!

What is it? A bralette is a wire-free bra that has little to no padding and is made from soft, comfortable fabrics to let your breasts flow into their natural shape without restrictions. If you’re over a C cup, these may not give you the support you need during the day but are good for a relaxing evening at home.
How should it fit? For more support, pick a 3-part cup and wider band, and/or one a bralette made of a more structured material.

5. Little Black Bra/Something flirty or fun⠀⠀⠀
What is it? Time to have some fun! The “little black bra” is seductive, low-cut, and often lacy and feminine. If you have bigger breasts, look for ones that have underwire and/or molded cups for more support during playtime.
How should it fit? Even though most women choose these for looks, they should still be comfortable and supportive, so follow the same rules of other bra types to ensure comfort and support.
