While New York Fashion Week has long been synonymous with astronomically priced gowns, the tide has been shifting in the last 5-10 years and designers are finally realizing that the vast majority of women are plus size.
Cultured Curves attended several NYFW shows in September and here are some of the plus-size fashion trends ithat are being worn right now into the New Year so catch the wave.
1. Boring Business Wear Transformed
Let’s face it; is there anything more boring than that stuffy business suit some of us are forced to wear 5 days a week to look “professional”? Well, now we can follow the rules of corporate America and still be stylish. Business suits in bright colors and non-traditional fabrics brought joy to the face of every businesswoman in the audience!

2. Statement Headpieces
There was a time in the not-so-distant past when no one, man or woman, would ever dream of leaving the house, even just to visit a friend, without a hat on their head. While cultural norms have changed, our desire to stand out from the crowd has never dimmed, which was evident in the many statement headpieces I saw. Heavenly hats, cutting-edge crowns, and even fluffy feathers graced countless runways.

3. Statement Sleeves
Draped and flowing statement sleeves, often embellished with beading, sequins, or fringe, were definitely a fan favorite this season. Whenever one of the models gracefully swept her arm up to call attention to her elegant sleeves, the crowd went wild!

4. Streetwear With a Twist
Streetwear is usually on the same excitement level as business wear (although infinitely more comfortable). That was definitely not the case this season, though. Even basic pieces like jeans and hoodies were leveled up with funky patches and bedazzled logos. And the footwear was fantastic! Super stylish sneakers, boots, and even sandals made me cringe at the mere memory of the old Nikes from the 90s.

5. Trains
Trains are no longer just for walking down the aisle on your wedding day! Both full and partial trains were everywhere this NYFW, adding extra glamor to even a simple dress. Just make sure to pick it up before you start walking so you don’t trip like some of the models almost did!

6. Tulle
Yes, the material of ballerina tutus are available in many different varieties, and it made lots of appearances at NYFW, and not just in skirts or dresses like you’d expect. Tulle appeared on the edges of collars and sleeves for a soft, feminine effect.
