Ashley Nell Tipton’s The House Plant Collection
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m pretty picky when it comes to my own personal style, especially when appearing at fashion shows and other events where I’ll be photographed. I typically wear dresses and skirts without slits, short sleeve tops because I hate anything clinging to my wrists, and I avoid crop tops and anything too high up on the neck like the plague.
So, needless to say, I was slightly skeptical when approached to review an outfit from Ashley Nell Tipton’s The House Plant Collection, which appeared to be everything I don’t like wearing; crop tops, skirts with slits, and (gasp) a mock-turtleneck blouse! But, hey, you gotta try something new once in a while, right?
The Philodendron Wrap Skirt
To say I was pleasantly surprised is a vast understatement. The Philodendron Wrap Skirt is made in an uber soft rib knit with an elastic waist to ensure it stayed put, but without that annoying digging into my belly that so many other skirts and pants have caused, featuring a slit that was just high enough to make me feel a little naughty without “giving away the farm” as my dear mother would put it.
Ivy Plant Top
The sleeves on the Ivy Plant Top, while gathered at the wrists, were just fitted enough to hold their shape without feeling like my circulation was being cut off. And, even though it was a crop top, the wrap feature reassured me that I wasn’t exposing more than I was comfortable with showing.
Philodendron Top
The most questionable piece was the Philodendron Top with its dreaded mock-turtleneck but I bravely took a deep breath and slipped it over my head, fully expecting to want to rip it off within 3 seconds. Believe it or not, more than ten seconds passed before I realized that I was actually quite comfortable! I did not feel like I was choking and the same soft fabric as the Philodendron Wrap Skirt hugged my curves in all the right places while still letting them move freely. Whew!
I don’t know what I was so worried about anymore. Ashley Nell Tipton was the very first plus-size designer to win Project Runway in season 14, so she knows more than anyone what a plus-size body needs. Her superlative styles are all shaped with curves in mind. They are a very smart investment in any wardrobe and can be worn whatever the season and are designed to be interchangeable with multiple other items from almost any brand.
That night, I walked into the fashion event with my head held high, my confidence coming from knowing that I had succeeded in stepping outside my comfort zone and was richly rewarded by feeling extra special. Thank you, Ashley!
