I came across this saying and it is everything!!! You are not fat. You have fat. You also have fingernails. You are not fingernails. How many times has the word “fat” been used to hurt, harm, deflate, or depress? It is another parameter that too many people, whether in business, fashion, or society, etc. use to exclude or belittle. This tiny word can have huge repercussions as to how we see ourselves. The danger lies in believing that everything we do and everything we are is summed up in one little word.
Once we start becoming defined by someone else’s view of us, it is easy to give in to these negative feelings. Such feelings can lead to barriers that invade our lives and prevent us from living it to the fullest. Because I am fat, I can not__________________ Because I am fat, I will never ____________.
Fill in the blank. Here lies the danger.
Little Word…Big Emotions
As someone who has been overweight since the second grade, I have felt the sting of these words and witnessed the roll of the eyes. It has taken decades to overcome the stigma that being “fat” placed upon me. Now, I know. I have fat but is it NOT the sum of who and what I am. If you are at the point where you can claim the word “fat” and be happy and positive about it, bravo. You are light years ahead of most people. Too many women are still struggling with this one word that can trigger so many harmful emotions.
Redefine Who You Are
So start today by redefining who you are. Ask yourself questions about what you want to be and do. It is never too late. I assure you that the answer will NEVER be found on a scale.
